Supporting Multilingual Learners at Holualoa Elementary

At Holualoa Elementary, we celebrate the rich diversity of languages! Our English Language Learner (ELL) program is designed to support students who are developing fluency in English, while excelling academically.

Identifying ELL Students:

We begin by acknowledging the unique linguistic backgrounds of our students. If a language other than English is spoken at home, students may qualify for our ELL program. Following state guidelines, they receive designated instructional minutes specifically tailored to develop their English language skills.

WIDA Assessment and Support:

To personalize learning, we utilize the WIDA assessment, which categorizes students as Fully English Proficient, Limited English Proficient, or Non-English Proficient. This helps us identify the specific level of support each student needs. Students who achieve proficiency in English transition out of the program, fully prepared to participate in mainstream classes.

Learning Beyond Language:

Beyond language acquisition, our ELL program fosters cultural acclimation. We recognize the importance of helping students navigate the American school system while embracing their cultural identities.

Meeting Every Need:

Holualoa's ELL program employs both "pull-out" and "push-in" models of instruction. Pull-out allows students to receive targeted instruction in foundational areas like phonology, phonics, and basic mathematics tailored to their specific language needs. Push-in support involves collaboration with classroom teachers, providing in-class assistance and differentiation strategies to ensure students succeed while learning alongside their peers.

Holualoa Elementary is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where all students, regardless of their native language, can thrive!
